The required characteristics for chrome-free basic brick for rotary cement kilns are considered to include the following three factors; i) adherence of a cement clinker coating, ii) resistance to wear, and iii) resistance to structural spalling. As discussed in case 3, the coating thickness on the developed chrome-free brick was less than that on the super high-fired magnesia-chrome brick, but the developed brick had a more stable coating layer than the magnesia-chrome brick, and therefore it was concluded that the adherence of the coating was not inadequate in field use. As discussed in case 18, the structural spalling (indicated by parallel cracking) was due to the liquid phase penetration of the cement clinker components causing temporary wear of the test bricks, but there was hardly any wear thereafter, after the working face peeled-off once at the beginning of the second campaign.
