Slaking Resistance of Spinel and Magnesia Clinkers

How the slaking resistance was changed by the combination of raw materials or firming temperature was studied, using various kinds of spinel and magnesia clinkers. Consequently, following matters were found. (1) The slaking resistance of spinel clinker of MgO excess type was changed by the microstructure and significantly declined under the condition in which spinel and periclase crystals greatly grew, resulting in the formation of many microcracks or caves caused by the difference of expansion between spinel and periclase. Accordingly, the consideration on not only slaking resistance of raw materials themselves but also firing conditions and microstructure of bricks is essential. (2) The slaking resistance of magnesia clinker was significantly improved by forming the silicate protective layer moderately containing flux components like SiO_2 and CaO in the periclase grain boundary. (3) The slaking resistance of MgO excess type spinel-magnesia mixture after fired at high temperature was improved by the formation of the protective layers of spinel or calucium silicate on crystal grain boundaries in respective grains caused by the mutual mass migration, Al_2O_3 from spinel grains and SiO_2 and CaO. from magnesia grains at the interface between both grains. It is assumed that this effect is greatly influenced by the number of contact point between spinel and magnesia grains, namely, mixing ratio, firing temperature and so on.
